The Lagos State Government has linked flooding around House on the Rock Church to illegal construction on floodplains and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, describing the infractions as key contributors to Tuesday’s flash floods in parts of the state.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, while sympathizing with affected residents on Wednesday, said Lagos remains highly vulnerable to flooding due to its coastal nature, with climate change further intensifying extreme rainfall and tidal surges.
“Lagos is naturally vulnerable to flooding, but the reality of climate change is making extreme rainfall and tidal surges more common. We have continued to invest in drainage infrastructure, regular desilting, and enforcement of environmental laws to minimize these impacts and protect lives and property,” Wahab said.
He noted that while technical issues contributed to flooding in some areas, such as Kusenla where a government-backed project with a pumping station is ongoing, infractions around House on the Rock Church worsened the situation.
“These activities worsen flooding and must stop. In several videos shared yesterday, infractions were clearly visible. Illegal reclamations without Environmental Impact Assessments and drainage clearance will also be removed,” the commissioner warned.
Wahab assured that the flash floods had receded by Wednesday morning but urged residents to take greater responsibility in flood prevention by keeping their environment clean, refraining from dumping waste in drains, and avoiding construction on flood-prone areas.
“Together, we can build a safer, cleaner, and more climate-resilient Lagos,” he added.
The state government reiterated its commitment to strengthening flood management systems but maintained that curbing the effects of climate change and illegal developments requires the full cooperation of Lagosians.
