SSANU, NASU Extends Strike Ultimatum by Two Weeks |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) has extended its strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by two weeks.

The unions had earlier issued a seven-day notice over unresolved welfare concerns, warning of an imminent nationwide strike if their demands were not met.

In a letter signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the unions condemned what they described as the unjust disbursement of earned allowances, as well as the non-payment of other outstanding benefits.

Ibrahim recalled that the unions had, in a June 18, 2025 letter, drawn government’s attention to the issues, which led to a meeting with the Minister of Education on July 4.

The fresh extension followed another meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, on September 19, where a joint consultative committee was inaugurated to review the unions’ demands.

According to the unions, the committee, which included officials from the National Universities Commission and the Ministry of Labour, held discussions but failed to produce concrete resolutions.

“The JAC of NASU and SSANU has resolved to extend the ultimatum by an additional two weeks, effective today,” the unions said, stressing that the extension was to allow the government more time to address their concerns.

They warned that failure to meet their demands within the new deadline would leave them with no option but to embark on “a series of legitimate industrial actions.”
