The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to meet its demands or face the prospect of a nationwide strike.
The union’s National Executive Council (NEC), in a statement issued at the University of Abuja, accused the government of neglecting the university system and failing to address the welfare of academic staff.
ASUU recalled that in August, its members across federal and state universities staged rallies to highlight the deteriorating condition of public universities. However, the union said the government has failed to respond meaningfully to their concerns.
The key demands outlined by ASUU include: Renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, Sustainable funding and revitalization of universities, Payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears, Resolution of over four years’ promotion arrears, Release of withheld third-party deductions.
An end to the victimization of members at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO
The union warned that failure to address these issues within two weeks would force it to embark on a two-week warning strike, which could escalate into a total and indefinite action.
ASUU also called on Nigerians, including parents, students, religious and traditional leaders, to prevail on the government to urgently intervene, stressing that the future of public universities is at stake.
