The management and staff of ARISE News Channel have announced the tragic death of their colleague, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with the station.
Maduagwu, fondly known as Sommie, died in the early hours of Monday, following an armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that the Nigeria Police have since launched an investigation into the attack.
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu was 29 years old at the time of her passing. Beyond her career in broadcasting, she was also a qualified lawyer. Colleagues at ARISE News described her as a professional, supportive team member, and a friend to many.
In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of management, the station expressed shock and grief over the loss:
“Sommie was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers. Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We extend our deepest condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”
Maduagwu’s death has thrown the ARISE News family and the wider journalism community into mourning, as tributes continue to pour in for a promising broadcaster whose career and life were cut short.
