The newly elected President of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has declared the return of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), promising discipline, integrity, and a renewed vision for the country.
Prof. Mutharika who was elected as Malawi’s 7th President on Saturday addressed jubilant supporters, reaffirmed earlier pledges, saying:
“I promise what I do; and I do what I promise. I promised that we would be back. And today, we are back with a new vision, a new DPP agenda. We are back by the will of God, and the collective will of the people.”
The President described the election as a turning point, crediting divine intervention and the unity of Malawians.
“This election has reminded us that Malawians are united in one vision and one dream, as one country with one purpose. We all wanted change. We voted for change. We expect change. I promise you real change zinthu zisintha!”
He emphasized that true transformation must begin with a shift in mindset among citizens.
“If you want a different Malawi, if you want different results, then let us begin to think differently, and do things differently.”
In a strong message to members of his party and public officials, the President warned against corruption, nepotism, and personal enrichment.
“Malawi belongs to its people. This country does not belong to any person, any tribe, or any political party. Let us be in government to serve the people—not to serve our bellies, not to serve our families. Government is not a feast.”
The President condemned the culture of corruption and looting that has plagued Malawi, declaring an end to the “tidyelele” mentality.
“The honeymoon of looting the government is over! You are dealing with a different President now. I will not allow anyone to destroy this country under my watch!”
He further pledged to work closely with Vice President Justice Dr. Jane Ansah, SC, in restoring discipline and integrity across all arms of government.
“The Vice President and I want to see discipline and sanity everywhere in government. We will clean up the house and restore integrity, as we challenge every Malawian to change our mindset.”
The President concluded with a call for unity and collective service:
“Let us rise above our differences to change this country as one people.”
