Police have confirmed the arrest of 29 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters following a disruption along the Mityana highway during a planned presidential campaign movement.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, who was scheduled to hold a rally in Mityana district, opted to use Hoima Road instead of the Mityana highway.
However, at Bujjuko trading centre along the Mityana highway, a group of NUP supporters gathered, drumming, whistling, and blocking the road, which caused traffic disruptions and unrest.
“Security personnel issued warnings, but the group persisted, leading to the arrest of about 29 suspects who are currently being held at Wakiso Police Division,” Onyango said.
He added that a joint security deployment had been arranged to facilitate the candidate’s movement and urged all presidential candidates to adhere to traffic regulations, follow approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users.
