The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, has flagged off activities to mark the 2025 World Food Day with a fitness walk aimed at raising awareness on food security and sustainable agriculture.
The awareness walk, held on Tuesday, was led by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Food Systems, Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that participants, including stakeholders and residents, took off from JJT Park, Alausa, Ikeja, walked to Allen Roundabout, and returned to the park while highlighting the importance of building a resilient food system.
The weeklong celebration began with a press briefing, and will continue with the Lagos Agric Scholars Quiz Competition on Tuesday, October 14, at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa.
The programme will climax with the grand finale on Thursday, October 16, at the Police College Parade Ground, Ikeja.
Speaking after the walk, Commissioner Olusanya noted that the exercise was designed to sensitize residents to the agricultural opportunities in Lagos and galvanize public support for the sector.
“People don’t see Lagos as an agrarian state, but under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos has proven to be very efficient in agriculture. We want residents to recognize that Lagos is indeed an agrarian state, though in a unique form and manner,” she said.
She further stressed that agriculture is central to daily living, citing products such as shea butter, tyres, and other essentials as examples. She also encouraged young people to embrace the sector and applauded stakeholders who continue to ensure food security in the state.
Olusanya added that World Food Day serves as a global reminder of the urgent need for collective action to end hunger and malnutrition.
