Ogun Police Detain Officers Over Extortion of Motorists |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Ogun State Police Command has detained several officers accused of extorting money from a motorist, Olawale Ayomide, along the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode road.

According to reports, the incident occurred on October 7 when the officers stopped Ayomide, who was driving his mother’s car, and accused him of not having proper license plates. Despite his explanation that the car’s registration was still being processed, the officers allegedly forced him to hand over money before allowing him to go.

A major breakthrough came when one of the officers inadvertently left his police cap in the vehicle.

The victim’s mother, Mrs. Omolabake, discovered the cap and encouraged her son to come forward with the full account of what transpired.

Following public attention on the matter, the Commissioner of Police ordered an investigation and summoned the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and the implicated officers to the State Headquarters in Eleweeran, Abeokuta. The officers were subsequently reprimanded and detained.

The DPO has reportedly contacted Ayomide to facilitate the refund of the extorted sum. The victim confirmed that he visited the police headquarters in Abeokuta and was asked to return to complete the refund process.
