Bayelsa Central Senator, Benson Friday Konbowei, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Konbowei attributed his decision to the PDP’s internal power struggles, lack of principled leadership, and persistent court cases that, according to him, have hindered the party’s effectiveness.

Konbowei, a seasoned politician who began his political career in 1992, has held several key positions in Bayelsa State.

He previously served as Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Council, Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, and Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, before being elected to the Senate in 2023.

Recently appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South-South Development Commission by Akpabio, Konbowei expressed appreciation to the Senate President for his leadership and encouragement.

He noted that his decision was driven by a loss of faith in the PDP’s ability to function effectively as a political party.

With his wealth of experience and political stature, Konbowei’s move is expected to further strengthen the APC’s presence in the South-South region, where he has pledged to continue advocating for development and inclusive growth.
