Malawi Govt to Import 200,000 Metric Tons of Maize from Zambia to Ease Food Shortage |LAGOS EYE NEWS

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced that his administration is set to import 200,000 metric tons of maize from Zambia as part of efforts to address pressing national challenges, including food insecurity, foreign exchange shortages, fertiliser supply, and fuel scarcity.

Speaking on Monday during a meeting with Scottish First Minister John Swinney at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, President Mutharika revealed that government officials are currently making financial arrangements to facilitate the importation of the maize.

He said his administration remains committed to ensuring food security and stabilising essential sectors, adding that the government is also sourcing fertiliser from reputable suppliers rather than unreliable or informal outlets.

The President further underscored the importance of investing in mining, manufacturing, production, and value addition as part of long-term strategies to strengthen the economy and address persistent forex challenges.

Mutharika also highlighted ongoing projects in the energy sector, including regional power interconnection initiatives, but acknowledged that limited financial resources continue to pose significant obstacles.

In his remarks, Scottish First Minister John Swinney said his visit to Malawi aims to reinforce the enduring partnership between the two nations, which has spanned over two decades.

He noted that the focus of their cooperation remains on inclusive education, healthcare, equality, renewable energy, and economic justice, stressing the need for an innovative and forward-looking bilateral relationship.

Minister of Foreign Affairs George Chaponda commended President Mutharika for outlining both immediate and long-term interventions to stabilise the country’s economy.

He also expressed appreciation to the Scottish government for its continued support to Malawi, particularly in the areas of education and health.
