A 29-year-old man, Odunayo Dada, on Tuesday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and malicious damage.
The prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Oct.18 at about 2:00p.m in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant assaulted and obstructed the complainant, Insp Adeye Idowu, while discharging his lawful duty.
Oriyomi also alleged that the defendant maliciously damage the officer’s uniform valued at N300,000 belonging to the Nigeria Police Force.
He noted that the offences contravened Sections 187(a) and (b) and 354(1) (5) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Odunayo Okunade, urged the court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
He adjourned the case until Nov. 25 for hearing
