The Ondo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, has debunked reports circulating on some news platforms alleging that the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) secretly increased electricity tariffs in the state.
Reacting to the reports in his office, Engr. Alabi described the claims as misleading, clarifying that the situation stemmed from the recent migration of some consumers from lower electricity bands to Band A, which naturally attracts a higher tariff.
“The story is not true. What happened is that some customers were recently upgraded from lower bands to Band A, which is invariably costlier,” he explained.
The Commissioner urged residents to remain calm and disregard the misinformation, assuring that the adjustments were necessary measures taken in the overall interest of the people. He noted that the new tariff structure reflects the improved and more reliable power supply currently being delivered across Ondo State.
“Without a doubt, there has been a notable improvement in electricity supply across the metropolis. It is therefore important to understand that the adjustment aims to ensure fairness and equity among consumers. Residents who enjoy longer hours of supply on Band A are charged differently from those on Bands B, C, or D with lesser supply hours,” Alabi stated.
Providing further clarity, the Commissioner outlined the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)-approved tariff structure as follows:
Band A: 20–24 hours supply -₦209.5 per kWh, Band B: 16 hours supply — ₦64.7 per kWh
Band C: 6–10 hours supply — ₦48.53–₦52 per kWh
Band D: Less than 6 hours supply — ₦42 per kWh
Engr. Alabi reaffirmed the Ondo State Government’s commitment to working closely with Benin Electricity Ondo Limited (BEOL) to sustain the progress in electricity distribution and ensure transparency in all operations.
He also appealed to residents to embrace energy-saving practices to reduce consumption costs and promote environmental sustainability.
“We must all actively seek ways to consume less energy. Turn off appliances when not in use and support the government’s efforts toward achieving a stable and sustainable power system,” he advised.
The Commissioner reiterated that the Aiyedatiwa-led administration remains dedicated to implementing policies and initiatives that guarantee access to affordable, reliable, and clean energy for all residents of Ondo State.
