The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan has pledged to uphold integrity, transparency, and discipline in steering the Commission’s affairs, declaring that “the eyes of the nation are upon us.”
Speaking at his inaugural address during a formal handover ceremony held at INEC headquarters in Abuja, Professor Amupitan expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him, describing his appointment as “a call to national service at a critical time in our democracy.”
He emphasized the importance of restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process and tackling voter apathy, with particular focus on the upcoming Anambra State Governorship Election slated for November 8, 2025.
“The Anambra election presents a pivotal opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to free, fair, and credible elections,” Amupitan stated. “The eyes of the nation are upon us, and it is our duty to rise to that occasion.”
The INEC Chairman called for unity and synergy across all departments, urging staff to work collaboratively to achieve the Commission’s objectives.
“Let us break down silos, foster open communication, and create an environment where every voice is heard and valued,” he said.
Reaffirming his commitment to staff welfare, Professor Amupitan promised fairness and inclusiveness in leadership.
“Staff welfare will be a top priority because we are going to expect so much from you. We must also be honest enough to meet your expectations,” he assured.
Earlier in the ceremony, the Acting Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, officially handed over the reins of leadership to Professor Amupitan, describing the event as “a significant moment in the life of our Commission and indeed our nation’s democratic journey.”
She noted that Amupitan was assuming office at a crucial period as INEC intensifies preparations for the Anambra election. “Elections are the lifeblood of democracy, and the expectations of Nigerians have never been higher,” she remarked, while commending the dedication of INEC staff whom she described as “some of the finest and most patriotic public servants in Nigeria.”
The ceremony also featured the introduction of the Commission’s directors referred to as “generals on the field of electioneering” who headed INEC’s 23 departments.
In a show of solidarity, a high-powered delegation from the University of Jos, Amupitan’s alma mater, attended the event.
The delegation included the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Bursar, and Librarian. Also present were Professor Amupitan’s wife, Professor Yemisi Amupitan, and their children.
Professor Amupitan concluded his remarks with a call to collective responsibility. “Together, let us uphold the values of democracy and work tirelessly to ensure the legitimacy of our elections,” he declared.
