Former Malawi President Dr. Joyce Banda has called for increased investment in the country’s mining sector, describing it as a key driver for economic transformation.
Speaking on Monday at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe upon her return from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where she attended the TANA Forum on Peace and Security. Dr. Banda emphasized the strategic importance of safeguarding Malawi’s mineral resources.
She noted that global demand for African minerals is rapidly rising, underscoring the need for Malawi to protect and maximize the benefits of its natural resources. Citing the rutile mine in Kasiya, Dr. Banda described the project as a potential “game changer” for the country’s economy.
“The world is scrambling for African resources. Malawi must ensure that our minerals are used to uplift our people and transform our economy,” she said.
Commenting on the TANA Forum deliberations, Dr. Banda explained that the conference discussed ways to strengthen peace and security across the continent.
She highlighted that Africa is currently facing over 50 conflicts, many of which, she said, are influenced by external actors seeking to destabilize nations through corruption and interference.
The TANA Forum provides a platform for African leaders, policymakers, and partners to engage in dialogue and craft innovative solutions to the continent’s peace and security challenges.
