The whereabouts of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan remain unknown amid a nationwide communications blackout and growing unrest following the country’s disputed general elections.
Regional media outlets report that President Suluhu’s location has not been publicly confirmed, as Tanzania faces a near-total shutdown of internet and telecommunication services.
The blackout, which has disrupted international calls and online access, was imposed after violent post-election protests erupted across major cities, particularly in Dar es Salaam.
Conflicting reports suggest that groups of youths have begun marching toward the State House as demonstrations enter their third consecutive day.
The absence of any official statement from the presidency, coupled with the silence of Tanzania’s state-controlled media, has intensified public anxiety and speculation.
The unrest stems from an election widely criticized by international observers and human rights organizations after several key opposition candidates were either barred from contesting or detained. Critics say the move effectively turned the polls into a one-sided affair.
In response to escalating violence, authorities in Dar es Salaam have imposed a citywide curfew and declared a lockdown following clashes between protesters and security forces.
Human rights organizations have expressed alarm over reports of enforced disappearances and political repression in the lead-up to the vote. The Financial Times earlier reported more than 200 cases of enforced disappearances since President Suluhu assumed office.
Amnesty International described the ongoing crisis as “years of bottled-up anger” finally erupting under the weight of systematic suppression and alleged state-sanctioned abductions.
Foreign governments and diplomatic missions have called for calm and transparency, though efforts to verify reports remain hampered by the continuing communications blackout.
