ADC Reacts to US Designation of Nigeria as Country of Particular Concern |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reacted to the recent action of former United States President Donald Trump, who designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over worsening insecurity and human rights violations.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the party described the development as a grave reminder of the mounting humanitarian crisis in Nigeria, emphasizing that thousands of lives have been lost to insecurity across the country.

“The real issue at stake is the thousands of human lives that have been lost, irrespective of tribe, religion, or region,” the ADC said. “We seize this moment to pay tribute to all the victims and extend our deepest sympathies to their families.”

The party noted that President Trump’s statement underscores the growing global attention to human rights and the duty of national governments to safeguard the lives of their citizens. It added that the dignity of nations in the modern world is now measured not only by economic might but also by their commitment to protecting human life.

According to the ADC, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has “failed most grievously” in this fundamental responsibility. The party cited reports indicating that nearly 15,000 Nigerians have lost their lives to violent attacks since the current administration assumed office in 2023.

“These deaths have occurred across all regions and religions, underlining a national crisis that cuts across every divide,” the statement read. “Entire communities have been displaced, worshippers have been attacked in places of worship, and bandits now control vast territories levying taxes on citizens and launching attacks with impunity.”

The ADC further expressed alarm at the resurgence of Boko Haram and the spread of other terror groups. It drew attention to an October 31, 2025, claim by the Al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM, which announced a successful attack in Kwara State an area considered a gateway to southern Nigeria.

“The crisis we face is not about any particular ethnic or religious group being targeted; it is an existential threat that endangers all Nigerians,” the ADC stated. “Every life lost that could have been saved is one too many.”

While acknowledging that insecurity did not begin with the current administration, the party accused President Tinubu of refusing to take responsibility for the worsening situation. “Instead of decisive action, Nigerians have been met with excuses, silence, and political posturing that mock the pain of victims and their families,” the ADC added.

The party concluded by calling for urgent and sincere national efforts to restore security and uphold the sanctity of human life across Nigeria.
