A fresh development has stirred the political landscape of Agege Local Government Area as Ganiu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has officially assumed office as Chairman of the council.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that his emergence follows the resignation of Hon. Tunde Azeez, popularly known as “Disco,” who cited health reasons for stepping down.
Hon. Azeez, who vacated his seat barely 100 days after being sworn in, had been on medical leave for several weeks. During his absence, Ganiu Obasa served as Acting Chairman a role that has now become substantive with Azeez’s formal resignation.
However, the transition has not come without controversy. Party insiders and political observers allege that the succession plan may have been orchestrated long before Azeez’s health troubles surfaced.
According to sources within the local political circle, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa had initially sought to secure the party’s nomination for his son to contest as council chairman, but the move was reportedly rejected by party leaders.
The Speaker was said to have later thrown his support behind his ally, Tunde Azeez, during the primaries, with Ganiu eventually selected as his running mate.
Barely weeks into Azeez’s administration, he proceeded on medical leave, paving the way for Ganiu to act in his stead a sequence of events many now view as politically strategic.
Despite the political undercurrents, residents have expressed satisfaction with Ganiu Obasa’s performance during his acting tenure. They particularly commended improvements in environmental sanitation and waste management, contrasting his efforts with the previous administration led by Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi.
As Ganiu Obasa formally takes charge of the council, public attention now shifts to how he will consolidate his leadership and navigate the political perceptions surrounding his emergence in one of Lagos’s most politically vibrant local governments.
