Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced her retirement from Congress, bringing to a close a historic political career that spanned nearly four decades.
In a video message released on Thursday, the 85-year-old California Democrat said she will not seek re-election when her current term ends in January 2027.
“We have made history, we have made progress,” Pelosi said. “As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power.”
Pelosi was first elected to Congress in 1987 to represent San Francisco and went on to become one of the most influential figures in American politics.
She made history in 2007 when she was elected the first female Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving until 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
As Speaker, Pelosi played a pivotal role in shaping national policy and steering her party through major legislative battles, influencing the agendas of multiple presidents.
Her departure marks the end of an era for Democratic leadership and American politics.
