German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is among world leaders travelling to the Amazonian city of Belém on Friday for a summit ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30).
Merz set off on Thursday evening and wants to use the trip to show that climate protection “is a central concern of the German government” – while guaranteeing economic competitiveness and technological openness, government sources said before his departure.
This is the first major UN conference that Merz is attending as chancellor.
He was unable to attend the UN General Assembly in September due to simultaneous budget discussions in the Bundestag, Germany’s lower house of parliament.
On the fringes of the summit, the chancellor will hold numerous bilateral talks, including with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Dozens of heads of state and government are travelling to the meeting in Belém, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the heads of the EU and the United Nations.
The Brazilian hosts hope that the early summit will give the two-week UN Climate Change Conference a boost.
COP30, with tens of thousands of participants from around 200 countries, does not officially begin until Monday.
