Armed bandits suspected to be members of the Lakurawa group have attacked a Nigeria Customs Service camp in Maje, a community in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing one officer and setting the facility ablaze.
Local sources told journalists that the gunmen stormed the area late Saturday night in large numbers and began shooting indiscriminately, forcing residents and Customs personnel to flee for safety.
“The terrorists came in large numbers and started shooting sporadically. Everyone ran for safety,” a resident of Maje said, describing the incident as terrifying.
One Customs officer was reportedly killed during the assault, while the attackers torched parts of the camp before escaping into nearby bushes.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Kebbi State Command, Muhammad Tajudeen, said officers were at the hospital awaiting confirmation of the victim’s death.
“Yes, the attack actually happened, but we are currently waiting for the doctor’s report to confirm if he is dead or not,” he said.
The assault marks another wave of violence in Bagudo Local Government Area, which has suffered repeated bandit incursions in recent weeks.
It will be recalled that the same Lakurawa group reportedly abducted the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammad Sama’ila Bagudo, last week.
The lawmaker regained his freedom on Saturday night after spending a week in captivity.
