Namibia’s President, Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, delivered a powerful address at COP30, urging global leaders to prioritize climate justice and ensure fair access to climate financing for developing nations.
In her maiden statement as Head of State at the global climate summit, President Nandi-Ndaitwah reminded delegates that those who contribute the least to climate change are often the hardest hit by its consequences.
She painted a vivid picture of Namibia’s struggle with increasingly frequent droughts and floods, which threaten the nation’s farms, food security, and livelihoods. Despite these challenges, the President emphasized that Namibia remains committed to climate action, citing the country’s Green Hydrogen Strategy and the Oshivela Green Iron Plant as models of sustainable innovation emerging from Africa.
“Adaptation must be at the heart of the global climate agenda,” she stressed, highlighting the need to protect water sources, strengthen health systems, build resilient infrastructure, and secure food supplies for vulnerable communities.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah also delivered a strong appeal for fair and accessible climate financing. She pointed out that developing nations continue to bear the greatest burden of a crisis they did not cause, often facing high borrowing costs and delays in accessing vital funds.
She called on wealthy nations, development banks, and investors to reform global financial systems to make financing more predictable, equitable, and affordable.
“The world will not judge us by how many climate conferences we host, but by the real actions we take to save our planet,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah declared, underscoring that climate justice must go hand in hand with financial justice.
