The Federal Government has assured that it will support vulnerable Nigerians who may be unable to afford the full cost of electricity when the cost-reflective tariff is implemented.
Managing Director of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Abdu Bello Mohammed, gave the assurance during a roundtable engagement with Power Correspondents in Abuja.
The event, themed “Cost Reflective Tariff versus Energy Poverty: Finding a Pricing Balance in Nigeria’s Power Sector,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss the need for a sustainable electricity pricing system.
Stakeholders at the forum agreed that while implementing a cost-reflective tariff is crucial for the growth and financial health of the power sector, it must be matched with significant improvements in electricity supply, both in quality and availability.
They also stressed the need to tackle technical and commercial losses within the power system, decentralize the national grid to minimize transmission losses, and increase investment in distribution infrastructure particularly in transformers and metering.
