France on Thursday commemorated the 10th anniversary of the November 13, 2015, terrorist attacks the country’s deadliest assault in modern history with solemn remembrance ceremonies and plans for a permanent memorial.
The coordinated attacks, claimed by the Islamic State group, left 130 people dead in shootings and suicide bombings across Paris and its suburbs.
The violence struck the Bataclan concert hall, where 90 concertgoers were killed during a performance by the US band Eagles of Death Metal, as well as several cafés, restaurants, and the Stade de France football stadium, where France was playing Germany.
The only surviving assailant, Salah Abdeslam, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the attacks.
President Emmanuel Macron is expected to visit each of the attack sites before presiding over a remembrance ceremony at a memorial garden in central Paris, honoring the victims and reaffirming the nation’s resilience in the face of terrorism.
