The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced that a new waste management regime will take effect from Monday, November 17, 2025, as part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation and restore orderliness across the nation’s capital.
The decision was disclosed during a media briefing held after the FCT Executive Committee meeting on Thursday. The meeting, chaired by the FCT Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, approved several measures aimed at strengthening waste management operations in Abuja.
Coordinator of the Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC), Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, explained that the Committee ratified a memo approving new contractors for waste collection and management across various districts of the FCT. He added that the approval also includes the procurement of basic treatment plants and the maintenance and operation of supervisory utility vehicles to support the revamped system.
Chief Obuah, who acknowledged persistent complaints about poor waste disposal practices in the territory, expressed optimism that the new regime would significantly enhance cleanliness in Abuja.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), Hon. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, confirmed the Committee’s ratification of funds for an emergency waste evacuation contract. The project covers the clearing of open dump sites, waterways, and streams in the Dogon Gada community within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). According to him, N111,913,176 was approved for the execution of the project.
In a related development, the FCT Transportation Secretary, Hon. Chinedum Elechi, announced the approval of funds for printing services for the Directorate of Road Transport Services. He further revealed that funds have been approved for the maintenance of 34 old traffic lights and the installation of three new ones within the Federal Capital City.
Earlier, the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Hon. Chidi Amadi, reaffirmed the Minister’s commitment to maintaining environmental cleanliness and transforming Abuja into a world-class city.
“The Minister is very concerned about waste management. He is serious about it because it is directly related to the cleanliness of the city,” Amadi stated.
