Troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade on routine patrol around Wajiroko in the Azir–Multe axis of Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State, came under heavy fire from insurgents on Friday while returning from a successful operation along the fringes of the Sambisa Forest.
In a statement released by Appolonia Anele, Lieutenant Colonel Acting Director, Army Public Relations said
the patrol team, led by the Commander of the 25 Brigade, Brigadier General M. Uba, included soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
They reportedly fought through the ambush with superior firepower, forcing the insurgents to retreat in disarray and abandon their mission.
However, the Nigerian Army confirmed that two soldiers and two CJTF members were killed in the encounter. The Army high command commiserated with the families of the fallen personnel, praising their bravery and sacrifice in defence of the nation.
In a statement, the Army also dismissed circulating reports on social media alleging that the Brigade Commander had been abducted during the attack. The military described the claim as fake and urged the public to disregard it.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Nigerian Army Medal, commended the troops for their courage and resilience, noting that they continue to operate under extremely dangerous conditions on behalf of the country. He emphasised that their dedication, even in the face of grave danger, highlights the daily sacrifices made by service members to keep Nigeria safe.
