Security forces comprising police tactical units, military personnel, and local vigilantes have intensified a large-scale search-and-rescue operation following the abduction of 25 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Kebbi State Command, Nafi’u Abubakar Kotarkoshi, confirmed that the attack occurred in the early hours of November 17, 2025, when armed bandits equipped with sophisticated weapons invaded the school at about 4:00 a.m.
Witnesses reported that the bandits fired sporadically as they scaled the school fence and forced their way into the hostels.
According to the police, tactical teams already stationed within the school premises engaged the attackers in a gun duel. However, the bandits succeeded in fleeing with 25 students into the surrounding forests.
During the assault, the school’s Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Yakubu Makuku, was shot dead while reportedly attempting to protect the students. A staff member, Ali Shehu, also sustained a gunshot injury to his right hand.
Following the incident, additional police reinforcements, soldiers, and vigilante groups were deployed to the area. The joint security team is currently combing suspected escape routes and nearby forests in an effort to rescue the abducted students and apprehend the perpetrators.
The Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, condemned the attack and reassured residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. He urged the public to remain calm, stay vigilant, and continue supporting ongoing security operations.
The Command said further updates will be provided as search-and-rescue efforts continue.
