Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has declared that the security situation in the state has significantly improved, insisting that “the worst is over” despite recent attacks in parts of the state.
Zulum made the statement in Maiduguri on Wednesday during a meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Shuaibu Waidi, where he assessed ongoing military operations and the general security climate.
The governor said that while the state had recorded fresh assaults on communities and security personnel, the frequency and scale of attacks had drastically reduced compared to the peak of the insurgency years ago.
He called on residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies and provide timely intelligence to help prevent further incidents.
He acknowledged the recent setbacks suffered by security forces but maintained that the overall trajectory of the state was toward peace and stability. He assured that his administration would continue to work closely with the military to enhance security operations.
Zulum commiserated with the Nigerian Army over the loss of personnel in recent encounters, describing troops in the theatre as heroes who have made enormous sacrifices, including paying the ultimate price.
Responding, Lt. Gen. Waidi commended Zulum for his consistent support to the armed forces and assured that Army headquarters would continue to provide the logistics and resources required to strengthen operations across the North East.
He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring full peace in Borno State and sustaining progress recorded so far in the fight against terrorism.
