The Federal Government has inaugurated the Renewed Hope Campus Transport Scheme, deploying 240 solar-powered electric tricycles to 12 federal universities as part of efforts to ease student transportation challenges and promote clean mobility on campuses.
The scheme was formally launched at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, who described the initiative as a direct mandate from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for Nigerian students.
“Mr President directed that we design solutions that are innovative, sustainable and responsive to the needs of our young people,” the minister said.
Implemented through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), each of the 12 beneficiary institutions received 20 electric tricycles and a solar-powered charging station.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that the tricycles will be operated by the Student Union Government (SUG) at subsidised fares to ensure affordability while generating revenue for maintenance and future expansion.
The selected universities span the six geopolitical zones and include UNILAG, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Benin, University of Jos, and Ahmadu Bello University, among others. The initiative is projected to reduce student transport costs by over 70 per cent and significantly enhance intra-campus mobility while promoting zero-emission transportation.
Dr. Alausa further announced that additional tricycles would be provided under the TETFund 2026 intervention cycle. He also disclosed plans for free CNG conversions for 2,000 university staff vehicles and the establishment of an 11 MW solar mini-grid for UNILAG.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, commended the initiative, describing it as a major boost to the institution’s sustainable and green transportation agenda.
The Federal Ministry of Education officially flagged off full operations of the scheme, reaffirming government’s commitment to student welfare, cleaner energy adoption, and innovation in the tertiary education sector.
