‘I don’t want Somalians in our country…, says Trump|LAGOS EYE NEWS

U.S. President Donald Trump sparked widespread criticism following a speech in which he made a series of harsh remarks about Somali immigrants living in the United States.

Speaking through a viral video, Trump alleged that Somali communities contribute little to the country and place a heavy burden on state resources.

In his comments, Trump claimed that Somali immigrants “ripped off” an unnamed state “for billions of dollars,” further asserting that “the welfare is like 88%” among Somali residents. “They contribute nothing,” he said. “I don’t want them in our country, I’ll be honest with you. ‘Oh, that’s not politically correct.’ I don’t care.”

He went on to describe Somalia as a country that “stinks,” adding: “We don’t want them in our country… We have to rebuild our country. You know, our country is at a tipping point.”

Trump also directed strong criticism at Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, calling her and her associates “garbage,” and accused Somali immigrants of not contributing to American society. “These aren’t people that work,” he said. “These are people that do nothing but complain.”

He concluded by suggesting that Somali immigrants “go back to where they came from and fix it.”

Trump’s remarks immediately drew condemnation from civil rights groups, immigration advocates, and political opponents, who labeled the comments xenophobic and dangerous. Supporters, however, defended the former president, arguing that he was raising concerns about immigration policy and national security.

The comments add to a long history of contentious statements by Trump regarding immigrants and minority communities, and they are expected to intensify debate as the election season continues.
