U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday voiced reservations about Netflix’s bid to acquire Hollywood giant Warner Bros., warning that the streaming powerhouse already commands “a very large market share” and cautioning that the proposed deal “could be a problem.”
Speaking on his arrival at the Kennedy Center Honors awards ceremony, Trump said he intends to be “involved in that decision,” referring to the looming assessment by federal regulators who are weighing the nearly $83 billion acquisition amid heightened antitrust scrutiny.
The President, however, also offered strong praise for Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos who recently held talks at the White House describing him as having done “one of the greatest jobs in the history of movies.”
If approved in its current form, the deal would see Netflix absorb HBO Max and Warner Bros. studios, the latter responsible for cinematic classics such as Casablanca and Citizen Kane, as well as modern blockbusters including Barbie.
