US Reaffirms Commitment to Addressing Religious Persecution, Focuses on Nigeria |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The United States House Appropriations Committee has reiterated Washington’s commitment to combating religious persecution worldwide, with Nigeria receiving particular attention in its latest engagement.

In a statement posted Wednesday on its official X handle, the committee declared: “America will not look away as innocent lives are stolen… Religious freedom and atrocity response are central to our NSRP bill.”

The committee revealed that a team of congressional appropriators, acting under the directive of President Donald Trump, recently completed an on-the-ground assessment mission in Nigeria to support policy recommendations on Christian persecution.

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, confirmed the visit on Sunday, noting that he hosted the delegation as part of ongoing security consultations between Abuja and Washington.

He said the mission followed earlier engagements in Washington, D.C., and centred on counter-terrorism cooperation, regional stability and efforts to strengthen Nigeria–US strategic security relations.

Rep. Riley Moore, a member of the visiting delegation, described the trip as “very productive” in a post on X.

He added that he met with Tiv and Catholic leaders in Benue State during the mission.

The development comes amid renewed diplomatic tensions after the Trump administration recently redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over alleged violations of religious freedom a move accompanied by warnings of possible US military intervention.
