The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Aviation, to intervene in the rising cost of domestic air travel by enforcing a 50 percent reduction in airport charges and auxiliary taxes.
The resolution was passed on Thursday’s plenary, with lawmakers expressing optimism that the measure would lead to a substantial drop in airfares ahead of the Yuletide season, enabling more Nigerians to travel by air.
The motion, sponsored by Rep. Obinna Aguocha, urged the Ministry of Aviation to establish a transparent assessment mechanism to determine the actual operational costs incurred by airlines during the festive period, ensuring fairness for both operators and passengers.
In a separate matter, the House also highlighted the plight of retirees and contributors under the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Pension Fund Limited, who are experiencing delays in receiving their pensions and gratuities.
The lawmakers called for urgent intervention to address the situation and provide relief to affected retirees.
