The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested an Osun State–based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, following a pro-Palestine protest organised in the state.
Sheikh Molaasan, who leads the Ta’awunu Muslimeen group, was taken into custody after a video circulated online showing him and his followers staging a march in support of Palestine, which is currently under Israeli occupation.
In the video, the group called for the liberation of Palestine while displaying the Palestinian flag.
The footage, which went viral on social media, sparked widespread debate and raised security concerns among members of the public. Critics questioned the nature and intent of the activities of Ta’awunu Muslimeen, particularly given Nigeria’s ongoing challenges with religious extremism.
Ta’awunu Muslimeen describes itself as an organisation committed to Islamic teachings and advocacy for global Muslim causes. The group has previously organised similar demonstrations, including a pro-Palestine protest held in 2018.
During the recent march in Iwo, participants were seen declaring allegiance to the Qur’an and Sunnah. However, some actions captured in the video especially coordinated arm movements by marchers drew criticism, with commentators likening them to a Nazi-style salute.
Further concerns were raised over the presence of children in the protest, as videos showed minors chanting intense religious slogans. Observers have described this as troubling, given the country’s history of security threats linked to religious radicalisation.
As of the time of filing this report, the DSS has not issued an official statement detailing the specific allegations against Sheikh Molaasan or the outcome of ongoing investigations.
