Manchester United moved up to fifth place in the Premier League with a hard-fought victory over Newcastle United on Boxing Day, strengthening their push for a top-four finish.
Despite enjoying just 33.4% possession, United were clinical where it mattered, recording their lowest share of the ball in any Premier League match this season.
According to league statistics, it was also their lowest possession figure in a league win since January 2023, when they defeated Manchester City with 29.4% of the ball.
Newcastle, by contrast, dominated ossession and territory but failed to turn control into goals. The Magpies attempted 621 passes, their highest total in a Premier League game this season, underlining their dominance in midfield. However, a lack of cutting edge in the final third proved costly.
United’s disciplined defensive shape and quick transitions frustrated the hosts, with key moments of quality making the difference.
The defeat leaves Newcastle in 11th place, with the risk of slipping further down the table when seven more Premier League fixtures are played over the rest of the Boxing Day schedule.
