Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have returned a N100,000 cash gift sent to their personal accounts by the state governor, Sim Fubara.
The money was transferred without the approval of the House, according to a statement from Hon. Enemi Aabo George, chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints.
“Today, the 30th of December 2025, Honourable members of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly received bank credit alerts of the sum of one hundred thousand naira each,” the statement read.
It added that the transfers were “unsolicited and unapproved” and were made on the instructions of Governor Fubara. Upon discovering the deposits, the lawmakers immediately returned the funds to the state government.
The statement emphasised the Assembly’s commitment to constitutional procedures, noting that “all public expenditures must follow due process, including legislative approval.”
It also criticised the governor for allegedly withdrawing funds from the state’s Consolidated Revenue Account without legislative consent, despite prior warnings, Supreme Court rulings, and constitutional requirements.
The move comes amid heightened tensions between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
