The chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Kwara Chapter, Mr AbdulRahman Onikijipa, has urged the federal government to do more to strengthen the economy and tackle insurgency and other security challenges across Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview with the newsmen on Saturday in Ilorin, Mr Onikijipa said the country had the potential to become a great nation if its resources were effectively managed.
He said all levels of government should prioritise peace, unity and economic prosperity in the new year, describing 2026 as a critical turning point for the country.
“We want 2026 to be the year of turnaround for Nigeria,” he said. “It is time for leaders and the public to work together to tackle insurgency, promote peace, unity and economic stability.”
Mr Onikijipa, who also chairs the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in Kwara State, commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as tireless efforts to fix the country, adding that public support for leadership was essential for national growth.
He also appealed to Nigerians, regardless of religion or ethnic background, to play an active role in maintaining peace and stability, stressing that responsibility should not rest with the government alone.
Congratulating Nigerians on the start of 2026, Mr Onikijipa expressed hope for improved health and economic wellbeing in the year ahead.
