Commuters at the Iwo Road Terminal in Ibadan are facing mounting hardship following a sharp increase in transport fares, with passengers reporting that even short-distance trips now cost significantly more than they did before the terminal became operational.
The situation worsened during the recent festive season, when the fare hike reportedly forced many travellers to abandon their journeys.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that several passengers were seen returning home with their luggage after discovering they could no longer afford the new transport charges.
Residents and commuters have described the development as distressing, noting that transportation is a basic necessity for daily life and economic activity. They argue that the unregulated increase in fares has compounded the financial strain already faced by many households.
In response, calls have been made for urgent government intervention. Members of the public are appealing to Oyo State Governor, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde, and relevant regulatory agencies to step in and regulate transport fares at the Iwo Road Terminal.
The commuters believe that timely action by the government would not only ease the burden but also demonstrate a renewed commitment to safeguarding the welfare and wellbeing of residents across the state.
