Uber on Monday unveiled a custom-built robotaxi that it plans to integrate into its global ride-hailing platform, beginning in San Francisco a symbolic launch on home turf it shares with Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company owned by Google.
The new robotaxi is being developed through a partnership with autonomous driving firm Nuro and electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid, using a computing platform powered by artificial intelligence chips from Nvidia.
The collaboration underscores Uberās renewed push into self-driving technology after years of relying on external partners rather than building its own autonomous fleet.
Uber and Nvidia announced late last year that they plan to deploy as many as 100,000 robotaxis beginning in 2027, signaling one of the most ambitious commercial rollouts yet for autonomous ride-hailing services.
The vehicles, based on Lucidās all-electric Gravity platform, are designed with passenger-facing technology aimed at improving rider comfort and control. Interactive screens inside the cabin will allow users to adjust seat heaters, climate settings and music, contact customer support, or instruct the vehicle to pull over, according to Uber.
The move places Uber more directly in competition with Waymo, which has steadily expanded its driverless taxi operations in San Francisco and other U.S. cities, intensifying a race to define the future of urban transportation.
