Rivers APC Opposes Impeachment Move Against Governor Fubara |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has publicly rejected moves within the State House of Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, warning that such action could destabilise the state and damage the party’s standing.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the party’s state leadership said it had taken note of what it described as “unfortunate developments” emerging from the legislature, even as it acknowledged the constitutional independence of the House of Assembly and its role in providing checks and balances.

The APC said it was firmly opposed to any attempt to impeach the governor or his deputy, arguing that the crisis appeared to be a continuation of unresolved political disputes that originated within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and had now spilled into the ruling party.

“It would be untenable for our party to remain silent while internal conflicts are allowed to resurface in our great party,” the statement said.

Addressing claims that the impeachment threat was linked to budgetary issues, the APC leadership pointed to the period of emergency rule in the state, during which a budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by the president in May 2025. That budget, totalling ₦1.485 trillion, was approved by the Senate on 25 June 2025 and by the House of Representatives on 22 July 2025, and is expected to run until August 2026.

The party noted that the budget covers a full fiscal year and that the governor is not constitutionally required to present a supplementary budget if he is satisfied with its provisions. It also cited constitutional allowances that permit a governor to continue spending for up to six months into a new fiscal year.

The APC urged lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly particularly those elected on the party’s platform to resist what it described as external pressure aimed at destabilising the government led by Mr Fubara.

The statement warned that the party would “do everything possible” to prevent an APC-led government in Rivers State from being undermined by internal disputes, and called on lawmakers to immediately halt the impeachment process.

The statement was signed by Darlington Nwauju, spokesperson for the Rivers State APC, who said the party remained committed to democratic governance and cautioned against what he described as “politicocracy” taking the place of democracy.
