The Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) has elected a new executive council to lead the association for the next three years.
In a keenly contested election held on Thursday at the NACCIMA House in Lagos, Comrade Taiwo Hassan of New Telegraph emerged as Chairman after securing 25 votes. He defeated Mrs Rhoda Ogunseye of CrystalNews.com, who polled eight votes.
The results were announced by the three-member electoral committee chaired by Comrade Haruna Jimoh of MITV, who confirmed that Mr Hassan met all electoral requirements and was duly returned as chairman.
Other members of the newly elected executive council include Comrade Stanley Ihedigbo of Mirror Online Newspaper as Vice Chairman; Comrade Olufemi Orioye of OGBC as Secretary General; Mrs Funmi Adeoye of FRCN as Assistant Secretary; Mrs Merit Ibe of The Sun Newspaper as Treasurer; and Mr Canice Opara of DispatchNewsOnline as Financial Secretary.
Mr Jimoh described the election as free and fair, commending members for their discipline throughout the process.
He urged the new leadership to deliver on its campaign promises and work towards strengthening the association’s standing.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Hassan thanked members for their confidence, pledging to lead with transparency, accountability and fairness.
He said the new executive would prioritise members’ welfare through proactive policies, regular capacity-building programmes and stronger engagement with key stakeholders.
Mr Hassan also reaffirmed CICAN’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s economic objectives, including the vision of building a one-trillion-dollar economy.
The electoral committee also comprised Comrade Ayanfeoluwa Providence as Secretary and Comrade David Oladimeji of BusinessNews.com as a member.
