A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, sentenced a 22-year-old miner, Ibrahim Shettu to two years at the correctional centre, for cheating.
The convict had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge bordering on breach of trust and cheating, preferred against him by the police.
The Magistrate, Mrs Irene Pati, sentenced the convict to a term of one year imprisonment for the offence of breach of trust, or a fine of N25,000 and one year imprisonment for the offence of cheating, or a fine of N25,000.
The court ordered that the sentences shall run concurrently.
She also ordered the convict to pay a compensation of N300,000 to the complainant.
While reviewing the facts of the case, the prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that a complainant, one Mr Uwaisy Muhammad, had reported the case on Nov. 10, 2025 at the Nassarawa Gbong Police Station.
Gokwat had said that the convict was given a cash sum of N316,000 by the complainant, to buy chemicals but he converted the money to his personal use.
The offence contravenes the provisions of the Plateau Penal Code Law. (NAN)
