Ghanaian police have arrested a man in the Greater Accra Region after seizing large sums of foreign currency suspected to be counterfeit and a firearm allegedly held without lawful authority.
The arrest was carried out by the Surveillance Unit of the Ghana Police Service’s National Operations Directorate at Ablekuma, following intelligence reports that a self-described fetish priest in the area was involved in criminal activity and unlawfully possessed a firearm, raising concerns about public safety.
Police identified the suspect as Josiah Elorm Kwame Amezado. A search of his room reportedly uncovered multiple one-hundred-dollar U.S. notes, a pair of handcuffs, a black vest, a Kuzey A100 blank pistol, and 58 rounds of 9mm blank ammunition.
Authorities say the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue to determine the origin and authenticity of the seized currency, as well as the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm and other items.
