Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed media reports suggesting that Vice-President Kashim Shettima could be replaced as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Monday, by the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka. The party described the reports as “speculative, untrue and utterly baseless”, following what it called a growing wave of media commentary on the issue.
The APC said the speculation had recently intensified, with some reports naming individuals allegedly being considered as replacements for Mr Shettima.
The party urged media organisations to avoid amplifying what it described as rumours and claims from “mischievous news sources”, warning that such reports could fuel unnecessary tension and confusion in the country.
It also noted that political activities ahead of the 2027 elections are not permitted under Nigeria’s electoral laws at this time.
According to the statement, the party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice-President Shettima in implementing the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda, which it said is driving economic reforms, growth and improvements in living standards.
The APC further cautioned its ministers, senior government officials and party leaders against making statements that could encourage speculation, calling on them instead to concentrate on governance and party responsibilities.
