President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the Senate to amend the Court of Appeal Act to increase the number of Justices from 70 to 110.
The President also requested an amendment to the Federal High Court Act to allow for an increase in the number of Justices from 70 to 90, citing the need to strengthen judicial capacity.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, read the President’s letters on the floor of the Red Chamber as the Senate reconvened plenary after a five-week recess for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Other correspondence from the President included a request for the Senate to confirm the appointment of Justice Oyewole Joseph Kayode as a Justice of the Supreme Court, as well as a bill seeking amendments to 24 health sector-related laws.
In his welcome address, Akpabio reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to enacting legislation that would positively impact the livelihoods of Nigerians.
The Senate also observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District. Legislative activities were subsequently suspended for the day in his honour.
Senator Akwashiki died on December 31, 2025.
