The Oyo State House of Assembly has adopted the findings of its Committee on Ethics and Privileges, indicting a lawmaker, Hon Ibrahim Shittu, over a viral video containing allegations judged to be defamatory to the legislature.
The report was presented during the plenary by the committee’s chair, Hon Gbenga Oyekola (Atiba). While the House accepted the committee’s conclusions and recommendations, it rejected an apology submitted by Mr Shittu, who represents Saki West State Constituency, and referred the case back to the committee for further disciplinary measures.
The Ethics and Privileges Committee was tasked with investigating the matter following a House resolution passed on Tuesday, 20 January 2026.
In the video, Mr Shittu was alleged to have accused the Majority Leader, Hon Sanjo Onaolapo (Ogbomoso South), of accepting bribes from the chairman of Saki West Local Government.
The footage also reportedly included disparaging remarks about the Speaker and the conduct of House proceedings.
According to the committee’s report, the statements made in the video were described as reckless and unsubstantiated, with the potential to erode public confidence in the Assembly.
During deliberations, Hon Luqman Jimoh (Orelope) appealed for leniency on behalf of the APC caucus, while Hon Sola Owolabi of the PDP also urged members to show mercy.
However, several lawmakers criticised the apology offered by Mr Shittu, arguing that it lacked sincerity.
A motion to reject the apology was subsequently moved and seconded. Ruling on the matter, the Speaker declared the apology inadequate and said it failed to demonstrate genuine remorse.
The Assembly then resolved to refer the issue back to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for further recommendations on appropriate disciplinary action.
