Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has left South African Premiership side Chippa United after the club agreed to grant his request to depart.
Chippa United confirmed the decision on Thursday, saying the Super Eagles shot-stopper had formally asked to leave and was subsequently released after discussions with the club.
The 29-year-old, who joined the club from Katsina United, spent several seasons with the Port Elizabeth-based side and established himself as one of their key players. During his time at Chippa United, he made more than 70 appearances and kept 25 clean sheets, earning praise for his consistency and leadership.
In a statement, the club thanked Nwabali for his service and professionalism, wishing him success in the next stage of his career. The departure follows a formal transfer request by the goalkeeper, which the club accepted after careful consideration.
Nwabali also posted a farewell message to supporters, describing Chippa United as “more than a family” and expressing gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and fans.
His exit brings an end to a four-year spell at the South African club, where he became a regular starter and captain, and further strengthened his reputation after helping Nigeria achieve success at international level.
The goalkeeper’s next destination has not yet been confirmed, but reports suggest he could attract interest from clubs seeking to sign one of Africa’s top goalkeepers.
Nwabali rose to prominence with Nigeria during recent international competitions, cementing his place as the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper. His performances have drawn transfer interest from clubs both within Africa and abroad.
Chippa United are now expected to seek a replacement as they prepare for the remainder of the season without one of their most influential players.
