The United States and the United Nations have condemned a deadly attack in Kwara State, Nigeria, which reportedly claimed the lives of more than 160 people, although the exact death toll remains unconfirmed and many are still unaccounted for.
In a statement, the United States described the incident as a “horrific attack” and expressed sympathy for the victims and their families.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families of those affected by this senseless violence,” the statement said.
The US also welcomed measures announced by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, including the deployment of security forces to protect affected communities.
It further noted the president’s directive to federal and state authorities to provide assistance to victims and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also condemned the violence, describing it as a terrorist attack.
“I strongly condemn the terrorist attack of 3 February, in Kwara State, Nigeria,” Mr Guterres said in a statement.
He extended his condolences to the victims and expressed solidarity with Nigeria.
“My heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and Government of Nigeria. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” he added.
