Unlike France, Germany is currently not planning to open a consulate general in Greenland.
“The federal government is already represented in Greenland by an honorary consul,” the Foreign Office said on Saturday, adding that the opening of a consulate is not planned at this time.
France announced on Friday that it had opened a consulate general in Greenland, becoming the first EU country to do so.
President Emmanuel Macron had already announced the creation of the consulate general in Nuuk last June.
US President Donald Trump had spoken at that time about wanting to take control of Greenland, which belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. He has since doubled down on that demand, although last month he ruled out using force.
