The Lagos State Government has announced a partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to allow rehabilitation work on damaged sections of the road.
The repairs, to be carried out by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Works, will affect both inbound and outbound lanes between the U-Turn Bus Stop and the Sango Tollgate. The work is scheduled to begin on Wednesday 11 February and continue until Wednesday 11 March 2026.
Authorities say the project will be carried out in two phases to reduce disruption to motorists.
In the first phase, lasting three weeks from 11 February to 4 March, repairs will focus on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway between U-Turn Bus Stop and Sango Tollgate. Traffic heading towards Abeokuta and Sango will be diverted to one side of the road, about 20 metres from the construction area, while work is carried out on one lane at a time. Once each section is completed, traffic will be redirected onto the rehabilitated portion to allow work to continue. Vehicles travelling towards Lagos will not be affected during this period.
The second phase, scheduled from 4 March to 11 March, will involve repairs on the Lagos-bound carriageway between Obadeyi Bus Stop and Ekoro Junction. Traffic heading towards Lagos and Abule-Egba will be diverted along one side of the road while construction takes place, with normal flow expected to resume after the work zone. Traffic heading towards Abeokuta will continue to move without interruption.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said traffic management measures would be in place throughout the project to ensure safety and reduce congestion.
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys in advance, follow traffic signs and cooperate with officials as the repairs are carried out.
Officials say the rehabilitation is necessary to improve road conditions and ensure safer travel for commuters.
