Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says it will begin enrolment for the National Identification Number (NIN) at ward level across the country from 16 February 2026.
In a statement, the commission’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, said the move follows a presidential directive aimed at expanding registration to grassroots communities.
The NIMC said the exercise would be free and is intended to register all Nigerians and legal residents, including children, into the National Identity Database.
It said the initiative was designed to decentralise its services, making registration more accessible and reducing the need for citizens to travel long distances to enrol.
The commission added that ward-level enrolment schedules have been published on its official website, and members of the public can also use its toll-free line to obtain further information.
